When a local game store came to us wanting a really defined brand for their new store's grand opening, it was something we really couldn't say no to!

Unplugged Gaming is a local game shop located in Manlius, NY with a focus in trading card games. They do also provide gaming supplies and provide an economy for locals to trade in their old cards.

Along with establishing a brand and its guidelines, we also provided voice & tone and photography direction.

Right Coast came to our team envisioning a brand new convention for the CNY area. With the help of another external company, they decided to try their hands in the realm of gaming conventions and needed a brand & website that could compete with the champs like PAX and NYCC. While ambitious, we worked out a plan and execution plan that could turn out something close to what they wanted.

The biggest challenge was figuring out how to stand out in an already well defined space while not standing so far out that nobody would pay attention. As the person on the team with the largest amount of knowledge in gaming and conventions, I had the specified task of coming into the project from a consumer perspective as well as a designers. It certainly wasn’t easy, but it helped give the client ease of mind and information as to why certain design decisions were made.

As the first large-scope project I was put in charge of, I am incredibly proud of where we left off. The client was over the moon, their contacts visiting the site enjoyed it, and it even won an RAF Award in the 21-22 award season. It, in the very least, gave the client a jumping point for where their brand and site could go in the future. The first ELITE Game Con is set to open in September 2022.

I unfortunately wasn’t around during the moodboard process, however what the client liked the most was the use of bright, vibrant color with geometric shape and fun visual monochromatic styles. These are some of the more finalized concepts.

After a variation of my first concept above was selected by the client, my fellow designer and I worked with the copywriter to flesh out their final brand guidelines as well as photography, type, and voice & tone. Since we were only doing their brand development, it was important to get this as solid as possible.

conclusion

It’s not every day that your local game store wants to change or evolve. After all, these places are built on having a small and dedicated community and those typically come with fair amounts of nostalgia attached. Regardless, it was still a joy to work on and while I still hope that one day I’ll be able to design a kick-ass site or hybrid app that they so definitely deserve, I can take solace knowing that I’ve done my part to help out my local game store in more than just buying product.
